5 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE ROMANS FOR KIDS

The Romans is the most fascinating time in history. It was also one of the most strangest times in history. In this bite-size blog we look at 5 fun facts that include rat dung, horse tigers, house cats & feathery helmets. We did mention it was  strange, didn’t we!? Well, here goes……

1. THEY LOVED EXOTIC ANIMALS

The Romans were big show offs. They loved a spectacle and would drag some of the most exotic animals from all around their empire to show off in the colosseum. What animals did they use? The Horse Tiger – or what is commonly known as the Zebra. They would train the Zebra to pull around a chariot during the games. Crazy!

2. THEY HAD AN EMPEROR WHO WAS ALSO A GLADIATOR

Emperor Commodus (161 – 192AD) really loved gladiators. He loved them that much he decided to become one himself! What’s more he never got beat. Was he that good at fighting? Not exactly. Commodus was a big cheat. He used to make his opponents fight with wooden or blunt swords so he would never get beat.

3. CENTURIONS WERE SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE SOLDIER

Centurion guards were part of the Roman army. They would command 80 soldiers or more. Impressive isn’t it? Well so was the plumage on their helmets. They wore colourful feathers on it which made them stand out like a big proud peacock!

4. THE ROMANS BROUGHT THE HOUSE CAT TO BRITAIN

Love your pet cat? Of course, you do. Well you have The Romans to thank for that. It wasn’t just the horse tiger (zebra) The Romans imported it was the domesticated house cat too.

5. THE ROMANS WANTED NICE HAIR

The Romans didn’t want to go bald. That was the last thing in the world they wanted. They would create some of the strangest concoctions to rub on their heads to encourage hair growth. Some of the disgusting mixtures include ground up horse teeth and rat dung. I think I’d rather be bald!
